The book West Azerbaijan Province is one of the volumes of the 33-volume Iranology collection. This series is the result of years of travel, field observation, and in-depth research. Drawing on reliable historical sources and the cultural landscapes of each region, along with hundreds of documentary photographs, the collection offers readers an interconnected view of the nature, history, culture, and attractions of every province.

This volume opens a window onto the nature, culture, and history of West Azerbaijan, presenting its urban, natural, and geological attractions in a clear and comprehensive structure. West Azerbaijan is home to Iran’s largest inland lake and is a land of unparalleled natural beauty: springs, rivers, waterfalls, forests, orchards, mountains, caves, and deep green valleys.

The province holds a remarkable treasury of ancient beliefs, historical artifacts, and architectural heritage belonging to civilizations such as the Manneans, Urartians, Medes, and Atropatenians. Its cultural features, together with ancient structures that have survived into the modern era, including one of the largest Zoroastrian-Sasanian fire temples and some of the earliest churches of the Middle East, reflect a rich tapestry of cultural and artistic expression. This coexistence and harmony among Azeri, Kurdish, Assyrian, and Armenian communities showcase a unified national identity viewed through the lens of Iranian civilization.

For all Iranians, especially those living abroad, this book serves not only as an encyclopedia whose value does not diminish over time, but also as a bridge that connects younger generations to the wonders of their homeland. As part of the Iranology collection, West Azerbaijan stands as a luminous treasury echoing the civilizational grandeur of Iran, offering a worthy companion for understanding the roots, settlements, customs, and natural marvels of this ancient land, an essential work for preserving cultural continuity and safeguarding Iran’s enduring heritage.

Mansoor Ghorbani

Born in Ordibehesht 1340 (May 1961) in the village of Nanj, Malayer, Mansour Ghorbani completed his early education in Malayer and earned his bachelor’s degree in Geology from Shahid Beheshti University in 1988. He later became the first graduate of the university’s master’s program in Geology (1991) and received his PhD in Petrology and Metallogeny in 1999. Since that year, he has been a faculty member at Shahid Beheshti University, where he currently holds the rank of Full Professor and has taught at undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels. He has supervised more than one hundred graduate theses and has been recognized as an outstanding university researcher.

Dr. Ghorbani has conducted extensive scientific and field research across Iran in earth sciences, physical geography, and ethnography. His scholarly output includes over 50 academic works—among them books (including three published by Springer), maps, atlases—and more than 150 national and international articles. He has also served as scientific and executive secretary for several national and international conferences.

His long-term field studies, combined with a deep interest in Iranian history, culture, and natural resources, have shaped his integrated approach to Iranology, encompassing nature, history, culture, and geography. His earlier research was published in a 10-volume Iranology series, and the present work serves as the introduction to a new 33-volume Iranology collection with a renewed perspective.
