Sharafnameh is one of the significant works of Nezami Ganjavi. This book, composed in verse, focuses on the life and conquests of Alexander the Great, the Macedonian king. It recounts the events of his campaigns and battles from the beginning of his rise to power until the final years of his life. One of the most renowned sections of the book is the story of Alexander’s search for the Water of Life in the Land of Darkness, which Nezami narrates in rich detail.
This volume has been prepared with the aim of strengthening the connection between Iranians and Persian-speakers around the world and the poetic legacy of Nezami Ganjavi. In this edition, the Sharafnameh has been presented clearly and elegantly for the esteemed reader.
Numerous editions of Nezami’s works, including Sharafnameh, have been published by scholars and experts in Persian literature—each valuable and significant in its own right. However, since our goal in this book is to offer an accurate, reader-friendly version with minimal errors for the general public, we set aside extensive philological analysis and focused instead on preparing a clean, accessible edition. Therefore, this work is based on the respected edition prepared by Master Hassan Vahid Dastgerdi.
Another feature of the present edition is the careful application of punctuation and diacritical marks throughout the text, assisting readers in correct pronunciation. We hope that this effort serves as a humble reflection of the profound cultural heritage of Iran.
About Ganjavi
Elias, son of Yusuf—known by his pen name Nezami—was one of the greatest Persian-language poets and storytellers of the 12th century. He lived in the city of Ganja, which today lies within the Republic of Azerbaijan. Based on the evidence found in his works, it appears that his mother was of Iranian Kurdish descent, while his father was likely from Tafresh or Farahan in central Iran. Beyond this, little precise information is available regarding the details of his life.
