The great Persian storytellers of the 6th century AH include Nizami Ganjavi, who lived in the city of Ganja, located in present-day Azerbaijan. Based on his works, it seems that his mother was of Kurdish-Iranian descent, and his father was likely from Tafresh or Farahan. However, there is no more precise information available about the life of this poet.
One of Nizami Ganjavi's most important romantic works is the book Khosrow and Shirin. This poem narrates the love story of Khosrow Parviz, the Sassanid king, and Shirin, an Armenian princess. It is Nizami's second long masnavi (narrative poem) and draws inspiration from ancient Persian stories. The romantic atmosphere of the tale, combined with the poet’s emotional and spiritual expressions, has made this work one of the most beautiful love stories in Persian literature.
The present collection is prepared with the goal of connecting Iranians and Persian speakers around the world with Nizami Ganjavi’s poetry. In this work, the romantic masnavi Khosrow and Shirin is beautifully and accurately presented to readers. Multiple editions of Khosrow and Shirin have been published by Persian language and literature scholars, each valuable and significant in its own right. However, as the aim of this edition is to provide an error-free and accessible version for the general public, we have set aside meticulous critical analysis for another occasion.
This book has been edited appropriately and is based on the edition prepared by Master Hasan Vahid Dastgerdi. Another feature of this edition is the inclusion of punctuation marks and diacritical signs to aid readers in the proper pronunciation of words.
We hope this effort can highlight the grandeur of Iranian culture.
