Product details
Iran today is a remnant of the world’s first ancient civilization, which played a significant role in shaping subsequent global civilizations. Despite losing large parts of its territory throughout history, its current geography remains the custodian of almost the entirety of its rich historical, cultural, and civilizational heritage.
In addition to its remarkable literary, artistic, and cultural assets, Iran today, with a population comprising approximately 1% of the world’s population and 1% of the world’s land area, is a land abundant in natural, energy, and mineral resources, ranking on average fifth globally in overall resources. Furthermore, despite the vastness of its deserts and arid regions—which possess their own unique beauty—the rest of the country is covered by lush Hyrcanian, Zagros, and Arasbaran forests, magnificent pastures, fertile plains, and breathtaking landscapes. Iran boasts an unparalleled natural richness, with significant biodiversity across its waters and lands, as well as a wide variety of climates.
Undoubtedly, it is this extensive diversity of rich natural and cultural heritage that, despite historical, political, and economic challenges, has enabled Iran to remain resilient and steadfast throughout time. Iran has a recorded history of at least 5,000 years, divided into three major eras: the ancient era, the classical era, and the post-Islamic era. During many periods, particularly the classical era, Iran was a global power in science, economics, and military strength.
Iran is the heir to many world firsts, including the world’s first university (Jundishapur), the first charter of human rights (Cyrus Cylinder), the first constituent assembly (Mehestan Assembly), the first observatory, and the earliest evidence of modern surgery (in the Burnt City).
The purpose of this book is to offer an overview of the nature, culture, and the rich yet turbulent historical past of this land, providing a readable resource for all Iranians and Iran enthusiasts—especially families and young Iranians scattered across the globe.
