Jalal al-Din Mohammad Balkhi, the great 7th-century mystic and poet known as Rumi, Mawlawi, or simply Mawlana, was born in the city of Balkh. In his childhood, due to opposition from some religious scholars in Khorasan toward his father, his family embarked on a long and irreversible journey—first to Damascus, and then to Asia Minor, which was then known as "Rum." Eventually, they settled in the city of Konya at the invitation of Ala al-Din Kayqubad, the Seljuk ruler.

Rumi’s life is undoubtedly divided into two distinct phases, separated by his fateful encounter with Shams-e Tabrizi, a free-spirited mystic. Before meeting Shams, Jalal al-Din was a prominent religious scholar in Konya. But after this meeting, he abruptly left behind his theological teachings and stepped into the realm of mysticism.

The story of this transformation and its challenges is a long one; however, its outcome was that Rumi evolved from a religious scholar in Konya into a timeless and placeless spiritual figure.
